Weekend Warmup and Opening Day

Thankfully warm weather arrived this past weekend and it really showed on the course.  Fairways are really starting to turn around and are showing great signs of growth.  Greens have also perked up and if temperatures stay warm like they are supposed to for the week, we will most likely mow them before the weekend.  All of this great progress leads to our opening day for walking which will be this Friday, April 11th!  Carts and the Driving Range are an unknown at this point and we will asses course conditions as we get closer to the weekend.  Please check back on this blog, our Twitter handle @WisClubGrounds or on Foretees for the latest course updates.

Today was a great day to be on the course preparing surfaces for play.  Greens were rolled to smooth the surface after the numerous freeze thaw cycles it goes through over the winter.  We also sprayed greens with a green pigment I mentioned before to help take advantage of the warming effect.  Areas on greens with winter damage were fertilized to help prime the turf to grow when temperatures become more conducive for better growing conditions.  The covers we installed on 5 and 11 are doing their job promoting growth and the warmer temps this week will definitely help their cause.  It is still unknown the true extent of injury on our greens.  Time will tell as temps continue to warm and we will take any measures to ensure the best recovery possible.

We paint blue dots on collars to serve as a starting point
for our employees mowing clean up passes.

Cleanup efforts continued around the course to prepare for Friday and are coming along nicely.  For the rest of the week we will get bunkers back into normal playing condition and audit sand depths for consistency.  Stumps will also be ground and hopefully we will be close to having them all ground by week's end.

Notice the contrast in color from one half to another.  We
sprayed pigments last fall which have helped this spring, but further
darkening of surfaces only helps our cause on cold, sunny days.
We are looking forward to having golfers back on the course and catching up with you after our long winter break!
