Spring work begins.
Here we are in the midst of another typical Wisconsin weather pattern in spring. One indication of what it has been like was when one of my staff members said, "beautiful day. Sun is out, little to no breeze, great day for work!" I checked our thermometer which had the mercury barely scratching 29 degrees. At least this weekend has some promising weather forecasted and we can all look forward to that.
The course is coming along nicely, but we are still a little ways off from opening. We have around 12" of frost in the ground which needs to leave before we think about opening the course to play. Causing damage early in the season can take much longer for recovery with cold soil temperatures in the spring. The long range forecast is looking up, but after Sunday it looks as if we will be cooling down a bit.
We have had opportunities to start grinding stumps and cleaning up parts of the course where we did tree work. It takes a lot of man hours to get this completed and my full time staff has been at it hard this week. Fortunately our seasonal staff comes back on Monday and we cannot be happier they are returning. We are about half way through grinding and cleaning stumps which puts us way ahead of where we have been this early in the season.
Surprisingly greens are coming along nicely in spite of cold temperatures. We sprayed a green pigment on them last fall when we applied our snow mold prevention and it has helped warm the surfaces on sunny days. All of us down here are looking forward to the first cut of the year and getting the course ready for the season. It will be here soon!
This mini excavator has been a huge help breaking up frozen stump grindings and saving the backs of staff members. |
The removed trees around this area will allow for better turf and playability conditions. |
