Winter Overview

Now that the golf course has been "put to bed", we have willingly switched to winter mode and allows us to continue preparations for upcoming golf season.  When we shut down the course for the year, we perform a number of cultural and agronomic tasks.  These would include a fungicide spray to prevent winter disease, sand topdressing of greens, approaches and tees for winter protection, blowing out the irrigation system, and stripping of sod in low lying areas around greens for improved surface drainage.  In the past years we have also deep tine aerated greens for even further surface drainage, but winter came on quickly this year and we were not able to get this completed.  We will get this done in the spring when we perform our yearly greens aeration.  All of these practices help prevent problems down the road and help keep the course more consistent.

Our new chipper is saving a lot of time and money for tree removals and pruning.

It is right around this time we get asked the question, "What do you do during the Winter months?"  We keep ourselves busy cleaning and maintaining our $1.4 million fleet of equipment, trimming and removing trees under the guidance of our golf course Architect, Bruce Hepner, refurbishing and repainting all of our ball washers, benches, tee markers and wooden amenities (coolers, bag stands, etc.), purging, organizing and cleaning our shop and storage areas, and planning and purchasing materials for the upcoming season, completing various shop projects, removing snow around the club house and maintaining cross country ski trails if and when it snows.

The XC ski trails have been marked and now we are just waiting for the snow to arrive!  A big thank you needs to be given to Mrs. Elizabeth and Dr. David Borst for the use of their snowmobiles to make our trails possible.  There are a number of members who have expressed interest in snowshoeing and all we ask is to walk alongside the ski trails.  Please come out often and warm up with a hot toddy afterward when the Clubhouse is open for lunch or dinner!
