67 Days Until Thanksgiving

The Fall Finish is upon us and we are starting to focus more attention to cultural practices, projects and the inevitable leaf cleanup.  This always has been and always will be my favorite time of year.  Colors, temperatures, halloween and caramel apples are just a few on the top of my list.  The golf course always has a spectacular fall display with trees showing their flare right before they start falling

Our project list for the course has never been shorter in the last year than it is right now, but we still have a couple odds and ends we are working on.  The areas which have been killed off around the course will be seeded with fine fescues over the next week.  Once established and mature, these areas will give beautiful contrast against our maintained turf grass areas.  Other projects include a small landscape project around the pump house, cart path edge repair, drainage basin repair and landscaping removal for the newly announced tennis court renovation project.  Lastly, we will finish up our bunker edge detail we started over the summer.

It is also the time of year we start cultural practices in the forms of aeration, vertical mowing and heavy topdressing.  Once our Monday outings are complete, we will start core aerating tees, approaches, collars and roll off areas.  I prefer coring for these areas to help modify soils and generate material to use for reestablishment of our turf grass nursery.  Fall is also the time of year we prefer to control our broadleaf weeds around the course.  The course is never cleaner of weeds than it is the following spring after fall herbicide application.  Fall feeding of turfgrass  with fertilizer is also on our list.  Fertilizing turf this time of year helps prepare grass for winter and aides in recovery of traffic from the season.  Our largest chore of the season is leaf clean up.  The man hours we spend chasing leaves is incredible, necessary, and we appreciate finding golf balls to stock our bags for next year!

Please pardon our disruption to the course in the coming weeks as we prepare for next year's playing conditions.  Enjoy one of the best times of year with some of the best playing conditions golfers will see on any golf course.  As for us, we will be enjoying the next 70 days readying the course for a long winter's nap.
